The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record emerged from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed confidence required a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international following.

Yet the sister act will forever be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
