Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also included leaders in various fields.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
