Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
