At least thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
