A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on recently seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
